April 29, 1997 - Custody Battle Begins
A court battle is brewing over custody of the only survivor of the Baileyton shootings. The maternal and paternal relatives of two year old Peter Lillelid have each filed petitions in Knox County Chancery Court asking for legal guardianship of the child. The paternal relatives want to take the child to Sweden, where they say his medical care would be covered under governmental socialized medicine. The maternal grandmother wants to take Peter to Miami. Lydia Selaya says Peter is most closely bonded with her and has spent considerably more time with her than with any other living relative. A decision is expected in about a week.
