April 20, 1997 - Outcry For Death
Penalty
The recent murder of three members of a Knox County
family near Baileyton is the latest incident to spark a growing outcry in Tennessee for
execution of convicted killers. A north Knox County store owner has hung six hangman's
nooses in front of his business for the six suspects in the April 6th killing of three
members of the Lillelid family. Tom Pierce says he is against lynching, but he wanted to
make a point about his support of capital punishment. Eleven Tennesseeans were shot to
death in various incidents in less than three weeks. Ninety-three people are on death row
in Tennessee prisons, but no one has been put to death since 1960 in the state of
Tennessee.
